Seventy-five (75) people came out to the Red Bird Farmers Market Opening Day today to buy homegrown eggs, kohlrabi, cabbage, green onions, kale, new potatoes, cauliflower, cucumbers, and more from seven market vendors.

The vision of providing opportunities for training and working from community that Red Bird leadership began to put on paper six years ago is taking a huge step forward with this week’s public announcement of a major grant award. Red Bird Mission, Inc., has been awarded $1.9 million by the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) for the Red Bird Mission Connected Campus Initiative that will bring reliable, high-speed internet to its campus in Clay County, Kentucky.

For a lot of elders in our hills, “going to the garden” used to be as normal as breathing. They were raised on beans, corn, and tomatoes they grew themselves.

After discussing for years the dilemma requiring every student pay tuition between $100 and $610 to offset the annual education cost of approximately $7,000 per student at Red Bird Christian School (RBCS), the Red Bird Mission Board of Directors took action yesterday to eliminate the tuition requirement beginning with the 2026-2027 school year.

Paul grew up in Perry County, Kentucky in a hardworking family that struggled at times. He was not averse to tell people his motivation for hunger relief, saying, “I know what it means to grow up hungry as a kid.” He worked tirelessly to resource, pack and transport thousands of food boxes for the Red Bird Mission Crisis Emergency Food Pantry.

Easter is a time for hope and Wednesday’s chapel services at Red Bird Christian School sent students home for Easter break with the message of hope.

Normally, a line seen backed up at God’s Storehouse represents food coming from another community for hunger relief, but Tuesday night’s line was all about the Red Bird GA families providing hunger relief by growing food in the community for their community.

As I completed one stop, I saw the person for the next stop coming down the hill to meet me. He was happy to get a meal, but also didn't want me to continue up his driveway that was still covered in ice.

“This work is the heart of the mission—people are counting on this food, and no matter if it’s rain, shine, snow, or ice, we keep doing God’s work and getting it to them.”

At the same time, these students are also spending part of their first week back in Agriculture class out in the fresh air, getting our school garden ready for spring.

Hearts were heavy this week to hear of the passing of Phyllis Crouse, former Red Bird School teacher and librarian on Saturday. The Red Bird School Alumni Association (RBSAA) formalized her status with the Living Legend Award in October, but students and staff knew many years ago that Phyllis Crouse was a Red Bird legend.

A small contingent of Red Bird Mission staff and Red Bird Christian School students attended the 2025 SOAR (Shaping Our Appalachian Region) Summit held in Corbin, Kentucky Wednesday and Thursday.

We've enjoyed two days filled with continuous fun and laughter at Red Bird Christian School (RBCS) during our Rev Up for Reading & Jesus Day Camp!

Over 100 people signed in (and even more who didn’t sign in) making the event an amazing success. With vendors, music, food, and door prizes, there was something for everyone to enjoy.

The entire Red Bird Cardinal Nation celebrated as Lucas Howard came home a 4-H Grand Champion on Saturday placing first with his Science Demonstration in Technology and Engineering , “Stay Safe, Ride Strong: Bike Safety Essentials.”

It’s a “fur piece” from Red Bird Christian School to Hopkinsville, Kentucky, but Principal Jennifer Wilder and Chasley Collett, K-1 Teacher, made the trek last weekend at the request of Rev. Steve McVay.
